"Then they separated us. We tried to say no, we applied for asylum as a couple. They say we don’t have any civil evidence that we are a couple. And we’re like “how can we show you any civil evidence if homosexuality is forbidden in my country?”
This Is Who I Am shares first-hand accounts from LGBT+ people about their experiences in their own country and on arrival in the UK, addressing the particular challenges they face going through the UK asylum system. The reading will be followed by a Q&A and panel discussion. Please be aware that the testimonies include accounts of state, sexual and homophobic violence.
ice&fire has produced more than a dozen verbatim scripts, eight full-scale theatre productions, and several participatory projects working with people who have experienced human rights abuses. The project Actors for Human Rights was founded in 2006 and is a network of more than 700 professional actors across the UK who are dedicated to drawing public attention to human rights concerns.
