Title: The Post Office Scandal: Professional Pathologies and Legality Illusions
Abstract: Whilst lawyers are supposed to protect the rule of law and promote the administration of justice, the Post Office Scandal is littered with examples where it appears they did the opposite. The result was hundreds of people improperly convicted of crimes they did not convict, with many more having lives ruined by allegations of incompetence and dishonesty. This paper will examine the Post Office Scandal to show how organisational culture, and the construction of crime, can be instantiated by the professional logics that construct, encourage, and shield abuse, irresponsibility, and dishonesty.
This event is part of the Criminology Seminar Series at Birkbeck. Co-hosted by Birkbeck's Centre for Political Economy and Institutional Studies (CPEIS) and Responsible Business Centre.
