If you are involved in environmental activism or campaigning, or are a student interested in climate justice, and want to develop effective communication skills to reach a wider audience, then this Climate Justice Writing Workshop is for you.

Run by Dr Imke Henkel, Programme Director of Birkbeck's MA Journalism, and Dorothy Stein, MA Journalism student and member of Birkbeck’s Climate Action Network, the workshop combines theoretical and practical elements to develop communication techniques for climate justice.

Starting with a case study (e.g. air pollution in London - exploring links between poverty and pollution) you will be introduced to fundamental research methodologies, the importance of fact gathering, and techniques for reaching an audience. Working in small groups you will then have the opportunity to experiment with different writing styles to test out the line between reporting and campaigning, considering what climate justice actually demands. Perhaps you want to write better press releases, news articles, or start or improve a blog. If so, you are encouraged to bring your own writing and campaigning ideas or short pieces of writing to the session.

The workshop is open to participants from all subject areas and with all backgrounds. No prior knowledge either in climate science or journalism is required. In addition to the development of participants’ communication and writing skills, the workshop contributes to Birkbeck’s community engagement and ongoing curriculum development around issues of climate justice and is part of Birkbeck’s inaugural Climate Festival: The Sustainable Now.
