Both Legal & General and Birkbeck share the goal to deliver progressive and long-lasting outcomes for students, our local communities, and the planet. Together, we have launched a partnership to combine Birkbeck’s renowned academic research with Legal & General’s financial and industry-relevant support.

Join L&G colleagues Wendy Walford (Head of Climate Risk, LGIM) and Nick Stansbury (Head of Climate Solutions, LGIM) for an interactive workshop exploring the uncertainties, complexities and challenges of achieving a just transition to renewable energy sources.

A ‘just transition’ means sharing the benefits of a green economy widely, creating sustainable livelihoods and leaving no one behind. Different countries and communities have specific priorities for their just transition. Advanced economies may emphasise green jobs and retraining opportunities for workers in polluting industries, while emerging and developing economies centre enhanced energy access and affordability, to grow economies and improve living standards. Achieving ‘just transitions’ will involve navigating immense social, technological and economic change while recognising these context-specific needs and values.

In this workshop, you will investigate the challenges of achieving a ‘just transition’ through a series of hands-on data inquiry activities, developed and facilitated by LGIM, in partnership with Birkbeck’s Environmental Education Team. You will work in teams to find answers to critical questions, and learn how finance can help in addressing some of the issues raised, moving us towards an equitable post-fossil fuel future for all.

No prior skills in data analysis or maths are required - just a curious, inquisitive mindset!

This event is running as part of the Birkbeck Climate Festival: The Sustainable Now. See the full programme of events here.
