ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
The English language requirements for our courses are provided on individual course pages as minimum IELTS scores, however we accept many other tests and qualifications.

Undergraduate Entry Requirements
Applicants from Germany who have completed the following can be considered for direct entry:
- Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife (Abitur) with a minimum final grade of 2.2 on a scale of 1 (highest) to 6 (lowest).
Applicants with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or A-levels will be considered for direct admission to our undergraduate degree programmes. IB requirements range from 28 to 30, depending on the course.
Applicants who fall short of the entry requirements may also complete a Foundation course for entry onto undergraduate programmes at Birkbeck. These offer the opportunity for guaranteed progression onto Birkbeck’s Bachelor programmes.
- A-level AAA = 144 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer 1.3 (corresponding subject grades: 14 = A)
- A-level AAB = 136 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer 1.5
- A-level ABB = 128 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer 1.8
- A-level BBB = 120 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer 2.0 (corresponding subject grades: 12 = B)
- A-level BBC = 112 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer 2.2
- A-level BCC = 104 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer 2.4
- A-level CCC = 96 UCAS tariff points = comparable offer 2.6 (corresponding subject grades: 10 = C).
Postgraduate Entry Requirements
To be considered for entry onto a Master’s degree at Birkbeck, a student from Germany must have completed:
- Bakkalaureus/Bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution
- Or Magister Artium/Diplom/Erstes Staatsexamen (pre-Bologna) from a recognised institution.
For programmes requiring a UK 2:1, students require a minimum final grade of 2.5; for programmes requiring a UK 2:2, students need a minimum final grade of 3.
Please note that all applications are considered on an individual basis and students may be admitted to Master's programmes with a lower-level degree if they have work experience relevant to the degree applied for.
If you do not meet these criteria, you can apply for OnCampus' Master's Foundation programme, which is available for two- or three-term progression onto a wide range of Master’s degrees at Birkbeck.
German degree classification:
- 1 (alternative name: Sehr gut; English translation or equivalent: Very good = 1st)
- 2 (alternative name: Gut; English translation or equivalent: Good = 2:1)
- 3 (alternative name: Befriedigend; English translation or equivalent: Satisfactory = 2:2)
- 4 (alternative name: Ausreichend; English translation or equivalent: Third class/Pass).
Research degrees Entry Requirements
For entry onto our research degree courses, students should normally have a Master’s degree/Magister from a recognised university with a final grade of at least 2.5 or equivalent OR a Lizentiat/Aufbaustudium/Zweites Staatsexamen (pre-Bologna) from a recognised institution with a final grade of at least 2.5 or equivalent.
Applicants are strongly urged to contact potential supervisors within the department before submitting a research application.
