2018 Edgington Lectures

The Department of Philosophy at Birkbeck College is delighted to announce that the 4th biennial Edgington Lectures will be delivered by Katherine Hawley on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th June 2018.

Time: 6 - 8 pm Friday 8 and Saturday 9 June

Place: Birkbeck Main Building, Malet Street, Room B36 (Friday) and Room B33 (Saturday)

'What Trustworthy People Do'
Professor Katherine Hawley (St. Andrews)

Trustworthy people are honest and well-meaning, but that’s not the whole story. We often slide into untrustworthiness by over-estimating our capacities, or by under-estimating the challenges we face. So knowledge of our selves and knowledge of our circumstances are crucial requirements for trustworthiness. The lectures will explore how trustworthy people deliberate about potential new commitments. And they will emphasise that tough circumstances make it more difficult to achieve trustworthiness, no matter how honest and well-meaning a person may be.

Attendance at the lectures is free and open to all, without registration.

Professor Hawley will also lead a Graduate Workshop on 8 and 9 June. Attendance at the Workshop is free, but places are limited and advance registration is required. For further details, follow this link:
