ALC presents at The 17th AILA (International Association of Applied Linguistics) World Congress

The 17th AILA (International Association of Applied Linguistics) World Congress was held in Brisbane, Australia on 10th-15th August. The Department of Applied Linguistics & Communication at Birkbeck had an impressive presence at the conference. Professor Li Wei gave the closing plenary on New Chinglish, Professor Zhu Hua convened a thematic colloquium on Symbolic power and conversational inequality in intercultural communication with Claire Kramsch of UC Berkeley, and presented two other joint papers, Professor Jean-Marc Dewaele presented a paper on Establishing the psychological and sociobiographical profile of proficient English foreign language users and took part in Study Abroad research network, and two PhD students, Yvonne Chi and Ron Peek, presented their research at the conference. Yvonne was awarded a travel grant by the Australian Association of Applied Linguistics to attend the conference. The AILA World Congress is held every three years. This year celebrates the 50th anniversary of AILA. The theme of the conference was One World Many Languages. The 18th AILA World Congress will be held in Brazil in 2017.
