Arts Council success for Birkbeck director

Arts Council of England has awarded grant to theatre company co-directed by Birkbeck director and academic Andrew McKinnon.

Andrew McKinnon is the Programme Leader of the highly-regarded Birkbeck MA in Creative Producing (MACP).  He is also Co-Director (with Martin Lewton) of Theatre North, a widely-acclaimed theatre and performance company that stages edgy and challenging work focussed on LGBT issues.

The Arts Council of England has now given the company a grant for the Arts Award for research and development on their latest show MIRANDO - a vivid and joyous ‘queer re-imagining’ of Shakespeare’s The Tempest that was much appreciated during Birkbeck Arts Week earlier this year.

Andrew says, “It’s great to have the support of the Arts Council for our work.   Birkbeck is a terrific workplace for me, both as a professional artist and a member of academic staff.  The MA in Creative Producing that I lead regularly brings professional theatre practitioners into Birkbeck to work with students – and the MA centres on current realities for new producers.  This new award will allow the company to work on MIRANDO with several artistic collaborators, culminating in showings to invited audiences in London, Brighton and Manchester.”
