Bianca Jagger to defend the Human Rights Act at the 2015 Annual Law Lecture
The School of Law at Birkbeck is pleased to announce that this year's prestigious Annual Law Lecture will be delivered by Bianca Jagger (Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation).
On Friday 6th November at 6PM, Bianca Jagger will discuss the Conservative Party's 2015 manifesto pledge to repeal the Human Rights Act and replace it with a 'British Bill of Rights'.
In the lecture, which will be held at Beveridge Hall in Senate House, Bianca will outline the reasons why we must defend the Human Rights Act, clarify some of the misconceptions that surround the Act, and dispel the 'Human Rights myths' which have surrounded its operation.
The lecture will also challenge the claim that the Human Rights Act weakens the ability of the government to respond to threats to national security and frame the move as partly rooted in anti-European xenophobia, which is often perpetuated by sections of the British media.
For over three decades Bianca Jagger has been a voice for the most vulnerable members of society, campaigning for human rights, civil liberties, peace, social justice and environmental protection throughout the world. She established the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation (BJHRF) in 2005. The BJHRF is dedicated to defending human rights, achieving social justice, speaking up for future generations and addressing the threat of climate change.
In addition to being President and Chief Executive of her Human Rights Foundation, Bianca Jagger holds the offices of Council of Europe Goodwill Ambassador; IUCN Bonn Challenge Ambassador; Senior Fellow, Centre for International Governance Innovation and Member of the Executive Director's Leadership Council of Amnesty International USA.
