Billy Budd Sailor at the Brighton Fringe Festival

Billy Budd Sailor, staged by Birkbeck’s Andrew McKinnon, has achieved critical acclaim at the Brighton Fringe Festival.

Billy Budd Sailior, a ‘ground breaking piece of close up theatre’ is a recounting of Hermann Melville's story of mutiny on board HMS Bellipotent in 1797, told by one performer in his bath.

Lyn Gardner at The Guardian said, “As the evening progresses, the atmosphere grows steamy .... the truth can be as slippery as a bar of soap ... the piece and Lewton's performance offer a sly take on a troubling tale of ablutions and absolutions.” While Eric Page writing for  GScene described the play as “a little gem .... a perfect piece of fringe theatre” .

Billy Budd Sailor is playing at the Brighton Fringe Festival until the end of May.

Andrew McKinnon is a Senior Lecturer at Birkbeck and Programme Director for the MA in Creative Producing.
