Following a vote by nearly 2000 students, staff and alumni, Birkbeck announces a new logo that will sit alongside its existing logo to mark two centuries of evening study.

Birkbeck's 200th anniversary logo to mark two centuries of evening study

Established in 1823 to educate working Londoners, Birkbeck remains true to its original mission. For nearly two centuries it has offered a unique way to study, with evening lectures making it possible for students to work, or pursue other daytime commitments, while they learn. Whilst 35% of the College’s students are full-time, it continues to be a leading proponent of and advocate for part-time, higher education.

Preparations are underway to celebrate Birkbeck’s 200th anniversary in 2023 and one of the first steps was to design and choose a logo to sit alongside the College’s existing logo to mark the occasion.

From a shortlist of three possibilities, students, staff and alumni were invited to vote for their favourite option. Nearly 2000 people had their say in the close competition, with the above design winning with 41% of the vote share, just 32 more votes than its next competitor.

Master of Birkbeck, Professor David Latchman said: “The College has two memorable anniversaries over the next three years: 2020 marks 100 years since Birkbeck joined the University of London and 2023, our bicentenary. We wanted to ask people who have a connection with the College to help to choose the 200th anniversary logo and were delighted with the number who voted. I look forward to seeing it in use throughout the 200th anniversary year.”

There will also be a range of exciting activities to mark our special anniversary year.
