The ground-breaking partnership between Birkbeck and Le Cordon Bleu London has won a prestigious award at the Independent Higher Education Awards 2019.

Le Cordon Bleu London, Britain’s leading culinary arts, wine and management school, received the ‘Breakthrough Course: Innovation in Design or Delivery’ award for the BBA Culinary Industry Management and newly launched MSc Culinary Innovation Management, both jointly delivered with Birkbeck’s School of Business, Economics and Informatics.

Having accepted its first cohort in 2018, the BBA Culinary Industry Management provides a firm foundation in culinary techniques and management studies, teaching cookery skills from classically trained chefs alongside business strategy and project management at Birkbeck.

The new MSc Culinary Innovation Management is designed to respond to the professional needs of the culinary industry, with a sustainable and entrepreneurial approach.

The judging panel singled out these programmes as exciting and accessible alternatives to more traditional degree courses. Students studying the undergraduate or postgraduate course benefit jointly from the industry expertise provided by Le Cordon Bleu and research-led teaching at Birkbeck. The College’s flexible, evening mode of teaching makes this an accessible entry-route into a wide range of roles in the culinary industry.

Dr Geoff Walters, Dean of the School of Business, Economics and Informatics, said: “I am delighted that Le Cordon Bleu London has received an award in recognition of this partnership. These innovative programmes offer students an excellent starting point for a career in the culinary industry, with teaching led by two distinctive institutions that are leaders in business and the culinary arts.”

Independent Higher Education is the UK membership organisation and national representative body for independent providers of higher education, professional training and pathways.
