  • 11 October 2016 update: If you are from the European Union and you enrol on a course that starts in 2017/18, your fee and loan eligibility will be entirely unaffected for the full duration of your course. There will be no immediate impact on the immigration status of any applicant, student or member of staff.   • 27 June 2016 update: EU nationals or their family members, currently in higher education or who have applied for a place at university from this August to study a course which attracts student support, and who are assessed as eligible to receive loans and/or grants from the Student Loans Company, will continue to receive these loans and grants until they finish their course. Birkbeck, University of London, welcomes students from the European Union (EU) and indeed the rest of the world.  Many of our staff are drawn to Birkbeck from EU countries and are involved in numerous important cross-EU projects. We are very proud of this diversity and the contribution all of our students and staff make to a vibrant learning experience at ‘London’s evening university’.

With the UK having voted to leave the EU, Birkbeck will continue to welcome students, staff and visitors from across the EU and further afield. There will be no immediate impact on the immigration status of any applicant, student or member of staff. 

We are committed to work with HE sector bodies to ensure the interests of our applicants and students are protected and that  both new EU students due to enrol in 2016 and our continuing EU students, can commence and complete their studies on the basis of the current terms, fee levels and access to financial support that are in place.

We can confirm that Birkbeck will not change the already published 2016/17 tuition fees for EU students. EU students who are registered at Birkbeck in 2016/17 (either as a new or continuing student) will be charged the home student fee for the duration of their course.

At this very early stage, like all UK universities, we cannot know exactly how the many connections our university has to the EU will be affected. We will publish further information on our website as it becomes available.

We are encouraging and accepting applications for the 2016/17 academic year from anyone wishing to benefit from a Birkbeck education. We are a unique university – a global centre of world-class teaching and research with classes held in the evening. Many of our students work during the day, building their careers and futures while they study.
