Birkbeck Annual International Development Lecture

Birkbeck Annual International Development Lecture

Wednesday 16th May, 6-8pm, Room TBC
Dr Emma Mawdsley
Reader in Human Geography and Fellow of Newnham College Dept Geography,  University of Cambridge
"Turbulent times: UK aid and development strategies in a complex world"
The UK faces an increasingly complex international development  landscape. Knowledge, finance and power are less structured around a North-South axis; and the geographies of global development challenges are changing. At home, the UK context includes Brexit, tabloid hostility, and the imposition of  austerity politics. Recent Conservative governments want to shift aid and development narratives, tools and policies in ways that maintain UK soft power, economic and security interests, while insisting on the morality and mutual benefits of aid and development. This talk will examine some of the current trends in the UK's aid and development strategies, including exit and transition; finance and financialiation; and discursive framing.
