Birkbeck has brought together its range of counselling and psychotherapy courses for students at all levels from beginners to those completing a full professional training in a new Centre for Counselling. The Centre, which is based on Birkbeck’s central London campus, was launched in late November. It enables students to develop a broad-based understanding of counselling and counselling skills, or to specialise in psychodynamic counselling and psychotherapy with unique organisational and psychosocial perspectives that equip them to work effectively in a diverse society.

Birkbeck has a long history of excellence in the teaching of counselling and counselling skills and is known for attracting students from a wide range of backgrounds to its courses. A ground-breaking diploma in student counselling was established by Clinical Psychologist, Ellen Noonan in 1972.

In 1988, the first counselling training to work with adults was launched at Birkbeck and in 1994, the first counselling and psychotherapy master’s courses were offered. The Centre for Counselling brings together all of Birkbeck’s counselling and psychotherapy courses into a single centre of excellence for the first time.

Speakers at the launch included Professor Sally Wheeler, Vice-Chancellor; Clea McEnery-West, Director of Birkbeck Centre for Counselling and Professor Nick Barwick, Head of Counselling at Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Clea McEnery-West said “I am delighted to formally launch The Birkbeck Centre for Counselling, which brings together the university’s counselling and psychotherapy courses into a single centre of excellence 52 years after counselling was first taught at Birkbeck. The new Centre will help us to continue to build on our reputation for providing excellent counselling and psychotherapy programmes that support improvements in mental health and promote interpersonal understanding at a range of levels, to a broad mix of students.”

In addition to providing its own foundation courses and professional trainings, the Birkbeck Centre for Counselling runs courses with a number of highly-regarded psychotherapy organisations, such as the British Psychotherapy Foundation (BPF) and Tavistock Relationships (TR). In the future, there are plans to introduce further counselling programmes as well as a range of CPD courses for those in related professions.
