Birkbeck will be offering three new degree apprenticeships, starting October 2017.
Apprenticeships offered by the College will include degrees in Chartered Management, Digital and Technology Solutions and a higher apprenticeship in Laboratory Science.
Higher and Degree apprenticeships were introduced by the Government in 2015 and are offered in a range of subjects up to Master’s level, combining study with vocational learning to help meet important national ambitions to boost skills and drive up productivity.
Apprenticeships are available to students starting out on their careers as well as mature employees looking to develop and progress in their role. Tuition costs for apprenticeships are covered by the government and employers.
Apprenticeship programmes will be delivered at the College’s campus in Bloomsbury through face-to-face evening study, enabling apprentices to fit their study around their work commitments.
BBA Chartered Management
The Degree, by four years part-time evening study, comprises work-based Learning and Management teaching which maps to the requirements of the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship standard. It provides career development opportunities for a wide range of individuals who wish to develop both their theoretical knowledge and management skills.
In addition to a University of London Bachelors of Business Administration (BBA) Honours degree in Chartered Management, those completing their portfolio and endpoint assessment also gain the apprenticeship award and Chartered Manager status.
BSc Digital and Technology Solutions (Software Engineer Specialism)
The Degree, by four years part-time evening study, will give apprentices a detailed understanding of core software engineering skills and knowledge alongside skills in business awareness and the application of theory to professional practice. Apprentices will deliver their own software solution project from conception via testing through to final product.
In addition to a University of London BSc Hons degree in Digital and Technological Solutions (Software Engineer), apprentices completing their final year project and a post-project interview will gain an apprenticeship award.
Foundation Degree in Laboratory Science (Analytical Science and Life Science Specialisms)
The Higher Apprenticeship programme, by three years part-time evening study, combines study at undergraduate level which complements the apprentice’s workplace experience in a laboratory-related employment. Apprentices will develop their theoretical knowledge, technical skills and professional competence.
The programme includes a combination of face-to-face teaching via lectures, small group sessions and practical laboratory sessions, culminating in a final work-based project which aligns to their studies and encourages apprentices to focus on professional practice.
In addition to gaining a University of London Foundation Degree in Science and practical experience in the workplace, on completion, apprentices can to apply for Registered Scientist status.
Commenting on the launch of the new programmes, Professor Philip Powell, Pro Vice-Master (Enterprise and Innovation), who is leading the degree apprenticeships project, said:
“Birkbeck students are typically working and studying so we are used to the challenges that arise in these circumstances. Our Apprenticeship programmes create a partnership between Birkbeck and the employer, enabling employees to achieve a degree and an apprenticeship qualification simultaneously.”
Alongside teaching and research, Birkbeck offers a comprehensive package of employability and entrepreneurship skills training and apprentices can take advantage of the full range of services the College offers.
