Birkbeck's autumn graduation ceremonies will see just under 1000 students graduate from the College at seven ceremonies in the University of London's Senate House, Bloomsbury.

Three days of festivities – on Tuesday 8th November to Thursday 10th November – will celebrate the achievements of a body drawn predominantly from students who are graduating from undergraduate degrees, along with a small number of Master’s degree and PhD students, from across the college’s five Schools.

The ceremonies this season will take place in the University of London’s Senate House, Charles Holden’s Art Deco masterpiece which was completed in 1937.

Degrees will be awarded personally by the Master of the college, Professor David Latchman, with Baroness Joan Bakewell, President of the college, in attendance to address new graduates and congratulate each presenting student.

In addition to graduating students, this November's ceremonies will see four new Birkbeck Fellows in attendance to be formally introduced to the College community. These include:

  • John Biggs, Mayor of Tower Hamlets, former GLA assembly member and former Governor of Birkbeck
  • Professor Sue Jackson, who joined Birkbeck in 2001 as lecturer in Lifelong Learning and Citizenship, in the then Faculty of Continuing Education. She has served as Head of School of Continuing Education, Director of the Birkbeck Institute for Lifelong Learning, Director of the Centre for Transformative Practice in Learning and Teaching and Pro-Vice Master for Learning and Teaching. In 2007 she became Professor of Lifelong Learning and Gender.
  • Stuart Popham QC, former partner at Clifford Chance, who has been involved in the work of the College since his role as a member of the Stratford Campus advisory group in 2004; he became a governor of Birkbeck in 2011 serving on the Audit, Remuneration and Nomination committees until stepping down in September.
  • Professor Miriam Zukas, formerly Dean of the School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy, who has enjoyed a career in adult education spanning over 30 years. Having recently stepped down from the post, she continues at Birkbeck as Professor of Adult Education.

All seven graduation ceremonies will also be live-streamed and available to watch in real time.

Commenting on this autumn’s graduating students, Professor David Latchman, CBE, Master of Birkbeck, said:

“Each and every one of these students have achieved something extraordinary – an academic qualification while balancing their studies with work, or with family commitments, or other commitments during the day time.

“To see such a sizable group of students graduating successfully is testament, too, to the demand for the unique approach which Birkbeck offers.”
