A series of public talks on science
26 – 29 March 2012
Science Week offers the opportunity to find out about the exciting scientific research taking place at Birkbeck, University of London. Scientists will be giving talks on the search for life on Mars, how filmmakers shape what we pay attention to in a film and how science can help preserve the objects on display in museums and art galleries, amongst other topics.
The events taking place during the week, show the wide variety of areas in our lives which science is impacting on, and will help demystify what scientists do behind laboratory doors.
Dr Ian Crawford, who will be giving a talk on his research into the search for life elsewhere in the universe said: "My research has taken me from glaciers in Iceland to studying the surface of Mars with spacecraft, all of which can help us to understand a bit more about how and where life might exist, or previously have existed on other planets. For anyone who wants to find out a little bit more about this, Science Week is a great chance to dip your toe into the scientific world."
Dr Tim Smith, who recently appeared on the BBC’s Film 2012 to talk about his research into the way film-makers can influence what people see in films, said: “I’m delighted to be giving a talk during Science Week 2012. It’s great to meet people who are interested in what scientists are doing, and how our work impacts directly on our lives, from art, to medicine to understanding the universe.”
The events are free, and open to anyone with an interest in science.
