Birkbeck Student Union food pantry reaches 10,000 meals distributed
A student-led initiative providing essential food and hygiene items has supported thousands since launching in late 2023.

The Birkbeck Students’ Union Food Pantry has now distributed over 10,000 free meals to students, marking a major milestone for the initiative. The service, which offers non-perishable food and essential hygiene items, was created in response to the increasing financial pressures faced by students during the cost-of-living crisis.
Launched in December 2023, just ahead of the winter break, the Food Pantry was established to provide accessible, confidential support to students struggling with food insecurity. The project was developed by then-Welfare Lead and now SU Chair, William Sarenden, who recognised the growing need for practical, stigma-free support on campus. He commented:
“This project was incredibly important to me, as it became clear that many students needed support, especially over the holiday period. For some, navigating external food banks can be daunting, so we wanted to create something accessible, free, and confidential right here on campus.”
The first pantry session saw more than 60 students access the service, with all available supplies distributed by the end of the day. It quickly became clear that both students and staff were keen to contribute, leading to the introduction of food donation points across campus.
Today, the Food Pantry operates during term time, supported by the Students’ Union’s Student Support Manager and a team of volunteers. It continues to serve as a vital resource for many, ensuring that no one in the Birkbeck community has to go without.
As part of its ongoing development, the SU plans to expand the range of items on offer, including more culturally diverse food and additional sanitary products, to better reflect the needs of the student body.
The next pantry session will take place on Tuesday 13 May, coinciding with Mental Health Awareness Week.
The Birkbeck community can continue to support the initiative in several ways:
-
Donate: Food donation points are located on the ground floor of the Birkbeck Central Building and in the Student Lounge on Malet Street. Items such as pasta, rice, and tinned goods are especially welcome.
-
Spread the word: Raising awareness helps extend the reach of the pantry and encourages further support from the wider Birkbeck network.
The Students’ Union remains committed to ensuring the Food Pantry continues to grow and support those who need it most, and the milestone is a testament to the generosity and solidarity of the Birkbeck community.
