Carlo Ginzburg Mastering Historical Research class
Carlo Ginzburg, Emeritus Professor at UCLA and the Scuola Normale of Pisa, is without doubt one of the world’s most influential historians. From The Cheese and the Worms to Night Battles, from Clues to Ecstasies to The Judge and the Historian, Wooden Eyes, Threads and Traces, his work has inspired generations. On 10 December he agreed to take part in the last class of Mastering Historical Research, our common core module open to all MA students, in a discussion of scale, chance and bias, microhistory and method.
Professor Julia Lovell commented: On 10 December Filippo de Vivo hosted a wonderful 'in conversation' event with Professor Carlo Ginzburg, attended by many students and colleagues. In an exchange that moved across the full range of Prof. Ginzburg's career, he discussed the challenges of scale, chance and bias, explored the possibilities of 'total history' and revealed insights into his own writing process. Huge thanks to Filippo for making this enlightening and inspiring occasion possible.
