Birkbeck, University of London, as a Royal Charter institution, sends our best wishes to His Majesty King Charles III for his Coronation on Saturday 6 May 2023 at Westminster Abbey.

Birkbeck has a long history of Royal involvement: the King’s Grandfather, King George VI, as Duke of York, was a President, and more recently his sister, The Princess Royal, has been Chancellor of the University of London since 1981. The Queen Mother, the King’s Grandmother, was also the Chancellor of the University of London before 1981.

King Charles is a strong advocate for education and skills having established The Prince’s Trust in 1976 to support under 30’s into education, work and training. His interests also extend into higher education, having been Patron of Trinity St David University, President of the Royal College of Music, and a former Chancellor of the University of Wales.

King Charles was the first member of the Royal Family to complete a full university degree course, graduating in 1970 with a BA in History from Trinity College, Cambridge. He also took additional study in Welsh history and language at Aberystwyth University to prepare for his role as Prince of Wales.

We hope he will continue to take a strong interest in educational matters while Head of State and extend our good wishes to The King and The Queen as they formally take up their new roles.
