Creative writing lecturer wins major literary award in France
Le Complexe d’Eden Bellwether, the French translation of the debut novel by Birkbeck Senior Lecturer Benjamin Wood, has been awarded le Prix du Roman Fnac 2014, the first major award of France’s literary season.
Published as The Bellwether Revivals by Simon & Schuster in the UK, the novel tells the story of Oscar Lowe, a care assistant working in a nursing home in Cambridge, who falls in love with the brilliant Iris Bellwether and becomes caught up in the dangerous schemes of her brother Eden, a troubled musical prodigy.
The novel was previously shortlisted in the First Novel category at the Costa Book Awards 2012, whose judges described The Bellwether Revivals as: 'Atmospheric, compelling and hard to put down'.
Benjamin Wood is the programme director of the BA Creative Writing at Birkbeck, University of London. His second novel, The Ecliptic, will be published by Simon & Schuster in March 2015.
