At a ceremony at Senate House on 21st February, Hilary Smith and Eleni Liarou, Associate Lecturers in film and television, were recipients of Birkbeck’s Distinguished Teaching and Scholarship Awards, which are awarded by the College for an outstanding contribution to teaching and learning.

Her professionalism, organisational skills and pastoral care have ensured that student recruitment and retention have remained high. Many students thank her for dealing with their problems and issues in managing their study and degrees part-time confidentially and sensitively. She is also incredibly fair in her management of student needs and her feedback on their work ensures their learning and progression. Students also love her classes. Hilary brings her love of film and professional experience of curating film to her courses.  She is highly knowledgeable about film and the film industry.  It is not only the students who benefit and learn about cinema from Hilary; her colleagues also appreciate her outstanding intellect, benefit from her generosity and enjoy her cinephilia.

The nomination for Eleni Liarou stated:

She keeps abreast of the rapidly changing broadcast environment and, with her Greek background, brings an observant outsider’s eye to the British, American and global television and media trends. The Media and Cultural Studies department in the School of Arts is lucky to have her as an associate lecturer. Eleni is a very dedicated teacher. Her use of Blackboard and Moodle is exemplary and students are kept informed and up-to-date with the latest links, references and information. Her feedback on student work is astute intellectually and supportive with detailed attention to improving their study skills. As a result students produce excellent work. It is associate lecturers like Eleni which make Birkbeck the special place it is for student achievement and satisfaction.
