ESRC Studentship
Fully-funded ESRC research studentships are available through the DTP and we are seeking applicants for the first cohort of students.
Birkbeck is a member of the UCL, Bloomsbury, East London (UBEL) Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP). The Linguistics pathway of this DTP brings together linguistic training in Birkbeck, the School of Oriental and African Studies and UCL and covers a broad range of specialisms. The Department of Applied Linguistics at Birkbeck, as the oldest university department of Applied Linguistics in the country, is well positioned to provide PhD training in the following areas including quantitative and corpus linguistics, language acquisition and disorders, critical discourse analysis, language policy and practice, language education, sociolinguistics, second language acquisition and intercultural communication. We have established training in research method and skills through dedicated modules such as Research Method and Design and Empirical Research Method Workshops and PhD seminars. Our commitment to working professionals and part-time education means that we welcome part-time as well as full-time students. Apart from conventional MPhil/PhD routes, we also offer 1+ route in which applicants who do not hold a recognized ESRC masters degree can apply for a +3 ESRC student to cover the costs of a Masters before progressing to a PhD.
Applicants can apply for a Full Award or a Fees-Only Award or full-time or part-time study subject to residency requirements. Applicants who wish to be considered for an ESRC studentship for MPhil/PhD studies in the Department of Applied Linguistics at Birkbeck must apply to the Birkbeck MPhil/PhD programmes by 6 January 2017. A covering letter should be included with this application stating that you wish to be considered for an ESRC studentship. This letter should make clear that Birkbeck and the UBEL DTP are your first choice in applying for an ESRC studentship and explain why your academic studies to date and proposed research project make you a suitable candidate for this highly competitive source of funding.
If you are shortlisted for an award, you will be invited to complete the DTP application process by 3 February 2017.
