'Holding to Account: How Effective is Parliamentary Scrutiny?'

One of Parliament's key responsibilities is to scrutinise and hold to account the Executive arm of government, but how effectively does it do this? What mechanisms of scrutiny does Parliament have and how well does it use them to scrutinise Ministers, departments, legislation, policy and impact on the ground? This seminar will explore parliamentary scrutiny and the influences that are brought to bear on Parliament and MPs which may encourage or inhibit its effectiveness, such as pressure from constituents or outside bodies and the press, systems and processes, resources, culture and politics.
