Event Report - Supporting Young Carers to Access and Succeed in Higher Education Event
On the 29th February, Linking London held an event to contribute to a more in-depth understanding of the challenges faced by student carers, helping partners support this group more effectively.
After introductions and an opening welcome from Dr Jakub Kowalewski, we had a presentation from Adem Ruggiero-Cakir from the Carers Trust about successful initiatives across UK’s HEIs. Adem also discussed various strategies that providers can develop in collaboration with the third sector, whose purpose is identify, engage, and help student carers.
We then heard from Dr Baowen Xue from our partner institution UCL who presented on her team’s research into how providing informal care in young adulthood impacts educational attainment and employment. Baowen also covered both quantitative and qualitive data collected recently.
Lastly, attendees got together in three breakout groups focusing on how HE and FE partners can effectively support student carers. Some points discussed included, what support institutions put in place to identify and engage with student carers, what policies could be introduced in the short-term to help student carers access and succeed at your institution, and long-term strategies for supporting student carers. You can find the full write up of the discussion on our Partner Area.
The event closed with thanking everyone for their contributions throughout the afternoon.
