Falsity II -- Negation, Fiction and Rejection
This is the second workshop in a series that puts the focus on a neglected notion: Falsity. Philosophers and logicians usually prefer truth. But falsity and its cognates, negation, denial, rejection and incompatibility deserve at least as much attention. At last year's workshop, entitled "Falsity -- not just Truth's poor relation!", we discussed the problems ancient philosophers encountered in explaining the possibility of false beliefs, arguments for the existence of negative facts, the explanation of negation in terms of a metaphysically primitive notion of incompatibility and the psychological advantage false beliefs can have. This year, we'll pick up on the theme of incompatibility within inferentialist and expressivist accounts of negation, issues surrounding falsity in fictions and the rejection of existence.
Confirmed speakers and commentators are María José Frápolli (UCL/Granada), Giulia Felappi (Southampton), Andreas Kaspner (Munich), Simon Hewitt (Leeds), Mark Textor (KCL) and Sarah Tropper (KCL). Abstracts for the talks are here.
