Forty years of Politics at Birkbeck
The Politics Department celebrates its fortieth anniversary with a series of lectures.
This year the Politics Department at Birkbeck celebrates its fortieth anniversary. There will be a series of lectures and round-tables from 5-15 November to celebrate. Academics from the department have also recorded a series of short videos explaining different political concepts.
The Politics Department was founded in 1972 by Bernard Crick, author of In Defence of Politics, and George Orwell: A Life, with Professors Paul Hirst and Sami Zubaida.
Dr Jason Edwards, Lecturer in Politics, said: “For four decades Birkbeck academics have been engaging with contemporary politics and society and providing relevant analysis to help us understand and tackle the issues of the day.
“This week of celebratory events will provide an opportunity to look back at this rich history, while continuing to explore the pressing issues of today – Britain’s place in Europe, austerity policies and the interplay between politics, power and profits.
“We look forward to welcoming past, present and future students and staff during the week.”
The events are free and open to all. You can find out more about the events and book on the Politics department’s webpage.
