This study day will examine Goya, from his career at the Spanish court as a painter of tapestry cartoons to his works of immense and enduring power documenting the Peninsular War. We will consider not only his satirical works and fantastic ‘Black Paintings’, but also his humorous, carnivalesque side, reflected in some lesser-known works, which illuminate his complex inventiveness in surprising ways.
