Joni Lovenduski to receive Lifetime Achievement Award from ECPR
Professor Emerita recognised for her crucial role in defining and developing the field of gender and politics within political science.
Birkbeck Professor Emerita Joni Lovenduski is the recipient of the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award from the European Consortium for Political Research.
According to the ECPR website, the jury "recognises the crucial role that Joni Lovenduski has played in defining and developing the field of gender and politics within political science."
The statement continues:
"Spanning more than thirty years, her pioneering research on the political representation of women, the selection of female candidates for elected office and the roles of women in political parties, has contributed new empirical data and advanced new conceptual frameworks and theoretical approaches, challenging the gender-blind assumptions of contemporary political science."
In her career, Joni Lovenduski has worked at a number of universities across Europe and the United States. She has been a Fellow of the British Academy since 2007 and was elected an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2009. She is Chair of the Editorial Board of Political Quarterly and a member of the editorial boards of British Politics, The British Journal of Political Science and French Politics. In 2013 she received the UK Political Studies Association’s Sir Isaiah Berlin prize for lifetime achievement in political studies.
Her published works include Feminizing Politics (2005), State Feminism and Political Representation (2005) and Gendering Politics, Feminising Political Science (2015). In July 2015, ECPR Press published Deeds and Words: Gendering Politics after Joni Lovenduski.
