Lorraine Lim, Lecturer in Arts Management, has recently been to Seoul, Korea to present her research on cultural policy in Singapore.
Dr Lim visited Seoul where she presented her research on cultural policy in Singapore at an event titled Cultural Polices in East Asia, Present and Future. This event was organised by Sookmyung Women’s University and the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute.
Lorraine’s talk centred around the notion of ‘independence’ in the arts and cultural sector in Singapore. Singaporean artists and organisations face extensive government intervention within the arts and cultural sector. This, however, has not stopped them from setting up arts venues which they describe as ‘independent’. Using multi-disciplinary arts venues as a case study, her talk examined the concept of ‘independence’ within the Singaporean context and the role that these spaces play within the arts and cultural sector in Singapore.
This research forms part of a chapter submission that she is working on for the book Cultural Policies in East Asia: Dynamics between the State, Arts and Cultural Industries which she is currently co-editing with Dr Hye-Kyung Lee at King’s College London. This book, scheduled to be published in 2014, brings together scholars based in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and Australia who conduct research on the cultural and creative industries in East Asia.
Lorraine Lim teaches on the MA Arts Policy and Management and Foundation Degree in Arts and Media Management.
