Julie Abrams-Humphries, a student on the MA Children’s Literature, entered a writing competition run by Mumsnet and Walker books earlier this year and recently discovered that her short children's story - When Polly Jumped Over The Moon - was one of winners.

Julie's piece will be published by Walker Books in October as part of a collection of bedtime stories. She works for the National Trust in a forest school setting and her story was inspired by a herd of red poll cows.

Julie comments: 'The course definitely helped with this story, it helped me realise that inspiration for writing is all around us and can strike at any time of day, and when it does, it must be written down! Our first term included some study on the structure and reader response to picture books, I certainly had this in mind when I was working out a rhythm to the story of Polly, The Jumping Cow.

I still work at Hatfield Forest, so while I'm continuing to work on a novel for young adults for my Birbeck Dissertation, I will make the time to write more short stories for younger children, based on the creatures in the forest.'
