World Book Day – March 6th

This year, we’re marking World Book Day to celebrate the impressive literary achievements of Birkbeck staff and students who have published books – both factual ones and fiction. Did you know that world famous poet, playwright and literary critic, T S Eliot taught English at Birkbeck for a short time in 1915 or that David Eldridge, a current lecturer in creative writing at Birkbeck has had his plays performed at the National Theatre and has written extensively for the television? In fact, he has a sell-out play at the National Theatre this November.

International Women’s Day – March 8th

Birkbeck was one of the first colleges in the country to admit women as students in 1830 and counts numerous famous women among its staff and alumni. Did you know that biophysicist and crystallographer Rosalind Franklin, whose work significantly advanced our understanding of DNA, studied at BirkbeckOther notable women include astronaut, Helen Sharman; and current leader of the opposition Kemi Badenoch, are part of Birkbeck’s history. Throughout March there will be several events, including the public seminar on War and Women's Rights, and the Empowering Women in Tech: Breaking Barriers & Building Futures online session.

International Day of Happiness – March 20th

We’re marking International Day of Happiness because we know how fulfilling education can be and how happy applicants are when they find they can fit studying at Birkbeck into their busy lives. Watch Daniel speak about his Birkbeck story and how he pursued his passion for film, studying BA Film and Media fitting it around his other work and other interests.

Mother’s Day – March 30th

Mothers Day means a lot to us because a lot of our students are mums. For many courses, Birkbeck offers daytime study, evening study or both, full-time, part-time, on campus, online or a mixture, allowing students to choose their own timetable and balance studying alongside being a mother. Read about how Sarah Chamberlain balanced her studies with bringing up her child.
