New ‘MSc Criminology’ Degree Launched at the School of Law, Birkbeck
In October 2018 the Department of Criminology in the School of Law will be launching a new MSc in Criminology . The MSc is open to students from a wide variety of social science backgrounds.
This new MSc programme has been designed for those who wish to pursue advanced criminological study and explore some of the most cutting-edge ideas in contemporary criminology and criminal justice. The programme provides a multidisciplinary platform from which students will engage with the complexity of debates and challenges around crime and its control in the 21st century. It will appeal to those with an interest in security, crime and criminal justice, as well as those seeking to develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of some of the core issues facing contemporary societies.
There are a limited number of bursaries available to incoming students, which equate to a £2,000 fee reduction. Please contact the Programme Director (as below) for further details.
As part of the Core provision on the programme, students will learn about and critically engage with the most widely used contemporary criminological theories and approaches. These include those which seek to explain crime and criminality in ways that are straightforward and useful for policy makers and practitioners, as well as those which seek to explicate the dramatic changes to criminal justice and crime control over the past few decades. Students will also be instructed in a wide range of research methods, and they will be able to choose from an extensive list of nearly 30 Optional Modules to complete their degree.
With a proud tradition in criminological scholarship and an internationally recognised body of research, the Department of Criminology at Birkbeck is committed to theoretically informed, empirically grounded and socially-engaged scholarship and teaching. The Department is currently home to over 250 students, 9 full-time academics, 14 cross-listed faculty as well as a number of part-time and professional support staff.
The introduction of the new MSc Criminology degree programme compliments the existing Postgraduate degree programmes offered by the Department, including the innovative MSc in Global Criminology and the popular LLM/MA in Criminal Law & Criminal Justice.
Students on the programme will be taught by research-active academics who work closely with the Institute for Criminal Policy Research (ICPR) and the World Prison Brief, both of which are housed in the School of Law. In the 2016-2017 academic year, the Department of Criminology received an overall 100% satisfaction rating on the National Student Survey (NSS).
