Centre launch: 'What is a University'?: Friday 27th Feb 2015
Screening and discussion
The launch of the Research Centre for Social Change and Transformation in Higher Education took place on Friday 27th Feb 2015 from 1.30pm to 5.00pm, with a showing of Fred Wiseman's "At Berkeley" and a response by Professor Peter Scott.
The event included a screening of extracts from the 2013 documentary, "At Berkeley", followed by a talk and discussion, led by Professor Peter Scott (UCL Institute of Education). The film shows the major aspects of university life, its intellectual and social mission, its obligation to the state and to larger ideas of higher education. It also illustrates how decisions are made and implemented by the administration in collaboration with its various constituencies. The documentary is directed by the distinguished film-maker, Fred Wiseman.
Peter Scott is Professor of Higher Education Studies at UCL Institute of Education. Prior to that, he was vice-chancellor of Kingston University. He has also been pro vice-chancellor for external affairs at the University of Leeds, as well as Professor of Education and Director of the Centre for Policy Studies in Education. Before going to Leeds in 1992, he was, for 16 years, Editor of Times Higher Education Supplement (now the Times Higher Education).
