New publication: Theatre and Therapy

Fintan Walsh, Lecturer in Theatre and Performance has had his book, Theatre and Therapy, published by Palgrave Macmillan.

Fintan Walsh, Lecturer in Theatre and Performance, has had his book Theatre and Therapy published by Palgrave Macmillan as part of its hugely successful Theatre & series, edited by Jen Harvie and Dan Rebellato.

Walsh examines some of the historical, conceptual and practical connections between theatre and therapy, focussing on issues such as actor training, theatre in therapeutic contexts, and contemporary theatre and performance practices. The book explores a range of examples that include the drama of Sarah Kane, the method acting of Daniel Day Lewis, the stand-up routines of Ruby Wax, and the queer, cabaret performances of David Hoyle. Ultimately, Walsh argues that a critical sense of the ‘therapeutic’ helps us to better understand the context in which a wide range of theatre and performance practices take place, and what those practices attempt to highlight or achieve.

Theatre and Therapy features a foreword by acclaimed UK performance artist Bobby Baker.

Fintan Walsh teaches on the BA Theatre Studies and MA Text and Performance programmes.
