Dr Daniel Yon from Birkbeck’s School of Psychological Sciences took part in a prestigious non-fiction showcase hosted by Penguin Random House at The Hoxton Hotel, London, earlier this month. The event featured Dr Yon and a select group of authors presenting their upcoming books to an audience of journalists, booksellers, and publishing professionals.

Dr Yon’s forthcoming book, A Trick of the Mind: How the Brain Invents Your Reality, was highlighted as a highly anticipated title release in 2025. In the book, Dr Yon draws on research in psychology and neuroscience – including studies from his own Uncertainty Lab at Birkbeck – to argue that the brain is like a scientist.

In the book, he explains how our brains build theories about the world around us, which go on to shape how we perceive our environments, other people and ourselves. This new way of thinking has profound implications for how we understand mental health, neurodiversity, relationships, self-understanding, and ways to cope with an unpredictable world.

Dr Yon commented: “It was great to be part of Cornerstone’s non-fiction showcase, and I’m very pleased to be highlighted as an exciting author to watch in 2025. My new book draws on years of research done by many people, including myself and others at Birkbeck. I’m looking forward to readers finding out more about some of the exciting psychology and neuroscience we do here at Birkbeck when the book is released soon.”

A Trick of The Mind: How the Brain Invents Your Reality will be published in the UK by Cornerstone, Penguin Random House on 26 June 2025 and is available to preorder now.
