The Department of Politics at Birkbeck, University of London is hosting an event entitled 'The Politics of Population Change' on 19 April 2012 from 6-9pm.

Over recent decades shifts in ethnic and religious composition have stoked tensions in many societies. Meanwhile, global migration pressures, which lie behind ethnic change in the West, will peak in 2050. Mass urbanization in the developing world is setting the stage for new social and political movements.

Professor Eric Kaufmann, whose co-authored book Political Demography: How Population Changes are Reshaping International Security and National Politics will be launched at the event, said: “Over recent years we have seen politicians begin to pay attention to the issue of population change and how they should respond to this in terms of policy-making for technology, economics and international security. This event will bring together leading academics working on population change and politics to consider these issues from an academic perspective and explore the ways in which governments and societies react to these changes and the challenges they bring with them.”

The event will also launch a new Population, Environment and Resources Group in Birkbeck’s Department of Politics, which will explore the nexus between population, environment and resources in an age of rising food prices, climate change and unprecedented demographic shifts, as well as the impact of ageing populations in the developed world and the youth bulge in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of west Asia.

The event is free and open to all and you do not need to register.
