Praise for the poetry of Birkbeck Creative Writing Lecturer

Liane Strauss wins praise for her witty and wry poems.

Liane Strauss, lecturer on the MA and BA in Creative Writing, has been winning praise for her poetry pamphlet, Frankie, Alfredo, and her poem, My Last Coyote, has been shortlisted for this year’s Strokestown International Poetry Prize in County Roscommon, Ireland.

The detailed and perceptive review of Frankie, Alfredo, summed up the collection as a set of ‘witty, clever, wry' poems which look afresh at love and the everyday ups and downs of relationships. Throughout the work Strauss entertains herself and her readers with intriguing references to Catullus, Archimedes, Lady Macbeth, Socrates and Jesus Christ, among others.

As a short-listed poet Liane will be invited to the Strokestown International Poetry Festival 4-6 May 2012, where she will give a short reading of her work. The winners will be announced and awarded on the last evening. The Festival has a strong tradition of supporting and encouraging poetry in Gaelic and English. You can find out more about the Festival and view the shortlisted poems on its web site.
