Professor Bale awarded Huntington Library Fellowship

This fellowship is to support Professor Bale’s research into medieval manuscripts connected with travel and pilgrimage. In particular, he will work on Middle English itineraries to Jerusalem and Rome, using the Huntington's celebrated collection of early books and maps. The Huntington, which is located in Los Angeles, California, has a world-leading collection of medieval artefacts, assembled by the magnate and bibliophile Henry E. Huntington.

The library's treasures include the image below (from Huntington Library MS EL 26 A 13), which shows a fifteenth-century Middle English description of 'The Weye unto Rome and soo too Venyse and to Ierusalem', which was written into a manuscript of medieval English poetry. Professor Bale's research at the Huntington will build on the work he has been doing as part of a Leverhulme Trust-funded Network, 'Pilgrim Libraries: Books & Reading on the Medieval Routes to Rome & Jerusalem'. Professor Bale intends to take up the Huntington Fellowship in summer 2018.
