Professor David Hamlyn
It is with much sadness that Birkbeck announces the death of Professor David Hamlyn.
It is with much sadness that Birkbeck announces the death of Professor David Hamlyn, Professor of Philosophy and Head of Philosophy at Birkbeck (1964-1988), Head of Classics at Birkbeck (1981-1986) and also Vice-Master at Birkbeck (1983-1988) and Fellow (1988), who passed away on 15 July, aged 87.
Professor Dorothy Edgington, who worked with Professor Hamlyn at Birkbeck, said: “David was Head of Philosophy for my first 20 years in the Department. He never took a sabbatical, always did a full share of teaching or more, produced a steady stream of impressive books and articles, and did all the administration—for instance, interviewing every applicant, undergraduate or graduate. He identified with Birkbeck’s unique role in university education, and was held in great and affectionate esteem by colleagues and generations of students.”
Professor Hamlyn’s family are asking for donations in his name to the Mind Association (Registered Charity No. 269707), which supports and promotes research excellence in philosophy. Professor Hamlyn was Editor of the Mind Association's quarterly journal Mind from 1972-1984.
