Professor Joni Lovenduski receives award for Lifetime Contribution to Political Studies
Pioneering work in feminist political studies recognised by Political Studies Association
Professor Joni Lovenduski, Department of Politics, has been awarded the Sir Isaiah Berlin Prize for Lifetime Contribution to Political Studies by the Political Studies Association.
Professor Lovenduski’s work has spanned more than thirty years and her influence has been profound both in academia and in British politics. As the figurehead of feminist political studies in this country, her work has influenced parties’ recruitment strategies and helped to put women voters and women politicians at the forefront of the political agenda.
The Awards Jury explained their decision to award Professor Lovenduski the prize, saying: “Her lifelong commitment to improving women’s representation at Westminster and her pioneering collaborative work have bridged the gap between the study of British politics and gender. She has been inspirational, especially to female scholars and has mentored many younger scholars.”
CEO of the Political Studies Association, Helena Djurkovic, said: “Joni Lovenduski has been an inspiration and role model to many young academics working in Britain today. At a time when the casual misogyny of much popular culture is a source of increasing concern, the intellectual case for feminism needs to be heard loud and clear. Joni Lovenduski continues to make that case with energy and passion.”
Professor Lovenduski said: “I am delighted that the Political Studies Association has chosen to recognise my work in this way. It is not only a personal boost for me, it is also a strong endorsement of feminist political science that I hope will encourage everyone who works in this area of research.”
Professor Lovenduski received her award at the Political Studies Association’s Annual Awards Ceremony, held in Westminster, and hosted by Michael Crick of Channel 4 News, on Tuesday 26 November. Other recipients in this year’s awards include Jack Straw (Lifetime Achievement in Politics), Stella Creasy (Campaigner of the Year) and Caitlin Moran (Enlightening of the Public).
