Professor Laura Mulvey of the Department of History of Art and Screen Media will be awarded an Honorary Degree by University College Dublin on 16 June.

University College Dublin customarily awards honorary degrees on Bloomsday – June 16 – the day on which James Joyce’s Ulysses takes place.

This year honorary degrees were awarded to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the cinema. Professor Mulvey, whose research covers feminist film theory, melodrama and world cinema, and the aesthetics of stillness in the moving image, has published widely on the history of both film and television.

Professor Mulvey said: “I am delighted to receive this honorary doctorate. This year, University College Dublin are not only celebrating their most distinguished alumnus, James Joyce, but also drawing attention to the fact that he set up Dublin’s first cinema in 1906.”
