Professor Martin Eimer elected as Chair of the Psychology Section at the British Academy
The Psychology professor will take up the post for the next three years.
Professor Martin Eimer FBA from the Department of Psychological Sciences has been elected as the Chair of the Psychology section of the British Academy. He will begin his three-year tenure on Thursday 22 July 2021.
Professor Eimer has been a fellow of the British Academy since 2016, and is also a fellow of the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina). At Birkbeck, he leads the Brain and Behaviour Lab where he and his team study cognitive and neural mechanisms involved in perception, attention, memory, and visual object and face recognition.
Professor Eimer has led the successful REF submissions of the Department of Psychological Sciences in 2008 and 2014, and was centrally involved in preparing the department’s submission to REF 2021. He is also a current member of the Cognitive Neuroscience and Mental Health Expert Review Panel at the Wellcome Trust.
Professor Eimer said: “I am honoured to take on this important role at the British Academy, and will work with my colleagues to further develop the national and international research profile and societal impact of UK Psychology. My appointment as Chair of the Psychology section at the BA is also a reflection of the excellence of Birkbeck’s Department of Psychological Sciences, which was ranked among the five best UK Psychology departments in the last two REFs.”
