Lecture Synopsis:

Monolingualism has long been taken as the ‘normal’ case in different areas of linguistics, including theoretical linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycho- and neurolinguistics, pragmatics, child language acquisition and other fields. However, research on bilingualism has brought a host of new insights at all these levels. For example, language contact is perhaps the most important factor in explaining how languages change. At an individual level, research has shown that bilingualism has a wide range of cognitive effects, from the intellectual to the emotional. I will consider some of this research and argue that, taken in combination, these findings have far-reaching effects for our understanding of language.
