Professor Gabriel Waksman, Head of Birkbeck’s Department of Biological Sciences and Director of the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology at Birkbeck and UCL has been elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society.
Fellowship of the Royal Society is made up of the most eminent scientists, engineers and technologists from the UK and the Commonwealth. Fellows are elected for life through a peer review process on the basis of excellence in science.
The main focus of the research conducted by Professor Waksman’s laboratory is to gain insight into the structural and molecular basis of secretion in Gram-negative bacterial pathogens, which cause infections in humans. His research team works on understanding the structures of large, multicomponent assembly systems which can be targeted to prevent the bacteria from causing infection.
Professor Nicholas Keep, Dean of Birkbeck’s School of Science said: “This is well deserved recognition of the exceptional science that Gabriel and his research team have been publishing for many years now, in the area of bacterial secretion, which is crucial in understanding infective bacteria.”
