Birkbeck has been ranked in the global top 5% for attracting international students in the latest QS World University Rankings, which were published today.

The College has been placed at 48th in the world for its international students, while the measure for international staff puts Birkbeck at 114 in the new table. Research is another key strength with citations (measured by Scopus between 2012 and 2017) giving a placing of 144th in the world.

Overall Birkbeck is ranked at 306 globally – two places up on the previous year – and is in the top 30% for only the second time since 2014. Compilers looked at 4,000 institutions of which around 1,000 of the top universities have been included.

The annual ranking encompasses factors such as the academic and employer reputation, student-to-faculty ratios, research citations for faculty members and the international make-up of faculty and students. The College's citations put it 16th in the UK and fifth in London.

In the space of six years, Birkbeck has moved up 68 places in the overall rankings and it is the 40th UK university listed (seventh in London). The College’s academic reputation, which gathers the views of academics from around the world on the institutions providing the best research, is among the metrics which have improved this year.

Professor David Latchman, Master of Birkbeck, said: “It is always encouraging that Birkbeck is recognised for its international outlook in the QS ranking, which speaks volumes about our overseas reputation and profile, as well as the international teaching environment we encourage.

“When taken with our strong REF and TEF results, these new findings demonstrate some of some of the key strengths which put Birkbeck on the map.”
