Recent successes for ISMB academics and students
News of recent success from academics and students of the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology.
Dr Vitor Pinheiro has been awarded a BBSRC (Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council) grant worth over £440,000, which will fund a PDRA. His area of research is synthetic biology which provides an alternative approach to that offered by traditional systematic characterisation for understanding the development of biological systems and their components.
Anna Miles, UCL Biochemistry student in her second year, has won the Biochemical Society Eisenthal Prize which will allow her to complete an eight week placement with Professor Steve Perkins this summer. The prize provides both valuable lab experience for the student and an introduction to ground-breaking scientific research.
The ISMB Graduate Symposium took place in June and gave ISMB PhD students the chance to present their work to their peers and supervisors. Professor Liz Shepherd, from the Research Department of Structural and Molecular Biology UCL, was guest speaker.
Dr Clare Sansom’s latest post on the Principles of Protein Structure blog examines a recent paper from Professor Helen Saibil’s team on the chaperonin GroEL.
