School of Business, Economics and Informatics agrees new partnership with university in China

A delegation from Dongbei University of Finance and Economics in China visited Birkbeck

On 18 July 2012 a delegation from Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (DUFE) in China visited Birkbeck to sign a memorandum of understanding between the Chinese institution’s Global Institute of Management and Economics (GIME) and the School of Business, Economics and Informatics (BEI) at Birkbeck.

The new partnership will include opportunities for DUFE GIME students to study at Master’s and PhD level in Birkbeck's Department of Management and a staff exchange programme.

Student exchange programmes

Up to fifteen students from DUFE GIME will study for a one-year Master’s in the Department of Management at Birkbeck. This will form the second year of a three-year Chinese Master’s programme and the students will graduate with dual degrees.

Three PhD students from DUFE GIME will be selected to study at Birkbeck. They will have the option to study in a mixed-mode model, completing the first year of study in London and the remainder of the programme in China.

Staff exchange

Staff at Birkbeck and DUFE will engage in collaborative research. Professor Klaus Nielsen, Professor of Institutional Economics in Birkbeck's Department of Management, who visited DUFE in December 2011, will be working with Tariq Malik, a former Birkbeck PhD student who is now a Professor at DUFE on a research project about the future challenges of the Chinese model of capitalism.

The agreement will also provide opportunities for staff to travel as visiting lecturers between the two institutions.

Professor Philip Powell, Executive Dean of the School of BEI, said: “We are delighted to welcome our colleagues from DUFE today and to be embarking on this new partnership, which will provide valuable opportunities for both institutions. We look forward to working with them and welcoming the first DUFE students to Birkbeck this autumn.”

This agreement follows the School of Business, Economics and Informatics’ agreement with China’s South Western University of Finance and Economics last year.
