Student members of the School of Law Mooting Society attended the Inner Temple Inter Varsity Moot Competition on Sunday 24 January 2016.
As well as the watching the competition, where students present the appellant or defendant’s case in a mock trial, attendees benefited from a two-hour talk on advocacy skills by leading lawyers Judge Iain Morley QC, a Bencher of Inner Temple, and Barrie Goldstone, an academic barrister at London Metropolitan University.
Iain Morley’s talk was particularly helpful, says Birkbeck LLM QLD student Sarash Bhatoolaul, because he discarded any notion that a lawyer had to be a ‘legal Samurai’, hostile to adversaries and witnesses in court. Instead, he told students that a good lawyer has integrity and presents irresistible arguments.
“All in all” says Sarash, “the event was a memorable experience and I would recommend every aspiring Law student to grab any opportunity to attend a similar mooting event in the future”.
The event was also attended by Professor Bill Bowring who recently judged ILSA’s international mooting competition in Moscow.
